Polytechnic Engineering

Polytechnic colleges in India are technical institutions that impart technical education. Polytechnic colleges in India offer three year diploma courses in Engineering and are completely outside the system of schools and universities. The engineering courses offered by polytechnics are regarded as abridged version of engineering degree courses offered by engineering colleges in India. These courses from a polytechnic enable a student to perform the basic engineering courses.

Polytechnics offer diploma courses in several branches of engineering such as Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Information technology, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering, Production Engineering, etc. Apart from these conventional subjects, polytechnics also offer courses in several new and emerging areas of Science and Technology.

In spite of the fact that polytechnics are not affiliated to any university, diplomas awarded by them are recognized by universities for admission to first degree courses in Engineering and technology. Since polytechnics offer Engineering courses, polytechnic education is regulated by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the same organization which is responsible for regulating education in engineering colleges and technical institutions. However, polytechnics are under direct control of State Departments of Technical education.

Eligibility criteria for an Engineering course in a polytechnic consist of a pass in Standard Tenth examination. Most of the states in India also have a separate Common Entrance Exam for admission to the various engineering courses in the polytechnic colleges of that particular state. Admission to some of the polytechnic colleges is solely based on the marks obtained at the Standard Tenth Examination.

Students of Polytechnic Engineering are usually employed as supervisors or junior engineers in various organizations. They can also gain lateral entry to degree engineering courses through an entrance examination.
